| Description | Daniel Hingston Bythewood, a British merchant and sea captain, is thought to have built this clapboard house for his wife, Elizabeth Taylor, who had persuaded him to give up his prosperous voyaging and become a Baptist missionary. Both he and his wife are buried in the Baptist churchyard. Built upon a high tabby foundation and braced by sturdy chimneys, the house looks out over a long sweep of lawn. The outstanding paneled interior includes hand-carved mantels and over-mantels, chair rails and wainscoting. Original wide pine flooring still exists in all rooms. The single thickness of the interior walls is one of the few remaining examples of this typical early Beaufort style. |
